Some Musings

To those who have commented on temporary parking for delivery purposes. Every HDB block of flats has such lots specially catered for such purposes. Also, most HDB flats have a garbage chute area with a wide space for the garbage truck.

Actually, I am not against parking at such areas. I would not want to post pics of cars/trucks parked properly in such areas - because they may be people making deliveries or parking for an urgent need. However, I would still expect them to park properly in these areas and not block others, be a road hazard, etc. As I have previously mentioned - I do not post pictures of vehicles that are just breaking the law; they need to be also of inconsiderate parking, causing obstruction, etc.

To park in a disability parking space is a no-no, unless you have a valid label. Having driven for many years, I have come to realise that everybody will have a thousand and one 'valid' excuses to park at a disability parking space. If we were to accept all that - then we may as well convert all the lots in a carpark to disability parking spaces, so that all the regular drivers who like to park in these lots will have sufficient space. Most of the pictures you see here of people parking at the disability parking spaces without a parking label are those who have been inconsiderate and leaving their cars there for hours or overnight - not those who are only urgently parking for a few minutes and then leaving.

Therefore, you need not feel pity for these drivers who get their cars displayed on this blog - if you park like an idiot - be prepared to be shown up here.

I hope those readers who have been having a 'flame war' in the comments section stick to commenting on the posts themselves, instead of hurling barbs at one another. If you do have to argue - please refrain from using obscenities. Thanks all!!

Here's a suggestion, although we have seen plenty of lousy parking from this blog, I'm sure many drivers feel that they're being shortchanged when faced with a below par parking lot. Truth is, some carparks have parking lots that are way too small, corners that are too tight, or have pillars which lie in your blind spots.

So, maybe another blog can be started to warn fellow drivers of hazardous carparks in Singapore, the address could be http://parkinghazards.blogspot.com Just a suggestion :)

I think that is a good suggestion. I do not have the energy to start another blog, though. However, I do not mind having a subsection to warn of carparks.

If enough people can submit such photos, I can post them up - and hopefully, the same authorities that book people for parking offences, can consider upgrading those substandard carparks.

i say this is a gd site but pls be more thoughtful not display the whole no. plate pls.

Parking Idiot said...

Regarding the display of plate number. There was much debate about that earlier. And the final decision was to display the whole number.

There is no law against this, and actually if the Parking Idiot was thoughtful in the first place, he would not have to see his car or plate number here.

The original intend of this site was honorable .. to highlight jokers who don't want to park properly. Unfortunately, the site have been reduced to "Good" Parkers condemning everyone who gets posted, whether good reason or not ... Anyone who tries to inject some sensible thinking into the discussion gets condemned as one who condone illegal parking. Was this the original intention ??

This has become another TalkingCock.com where pple talk about vandalising, hammering, puncturing, scratching, kicking cars and bikes. was this the original intention ???

Finally, all that negative energy should be channelled to better use, such as Wee's posting. The sites can be used to advise building management so that they will beef up their security to watch out for such pple who anyhow park. Wasn't this the original intention ??

Now, go ahead. I am ready to get condemned.

Think Wee's suggestion is a good one... maybe some of the guys here with the time to flame, argue and give friendly advices can consider channelling the energy to a new blog!

PI - support you for your initiative. Its not easy and with people threatening to use unsavoury language, i applaud you for being vigilant and deleting the offending comments.

With regards to parking, as a civilised society, we work on conventions... when lines are drawn to mark out cars and motorcyle parking lots, the are there to maximise the space for the most number of cars if everyone stick to the lines. By breaking convention, one is depriving another driver of their rights to enjoy driving and parking. The offenders deserve to be reminded of their selfishness, if that means a fine by URA/HDB or management, that's the risk they have "agreed to" when they park as they wished.

But making empty threats of vandalism is childish and acts of vandalism is criminal and lowering ourselves to the same level as these idiots or worse. The mature thing to do is to notify the authorities to take action and educating by highlighting through media like this.

PI, good luck for your media interviews. we look forward to the mass media highlighting parking courtesies to the general public so that young kids will also know what is good and bad parking and remind their adults too.

thanks for the hard work ... it has always been enjoyable as well as "exciting" when reading your blog ...

flames war are impossible to avoid ... it shows that idiotic parking touches the raw nerves of many people that read the blog … whether it is from the victims – people who suffered from idiotic parking … or from the “victims” – people or people you know where the pictures of the alleged cars are being displayed …

but one thing is for sure, whether you are against idiotic parking of any sorts [handicapped lot parkers (HLP), double lots parkers (DLP) or even indiscriminate parking (IDP)] or you think that this is a trivial matter, it goes to show people do care …

continue with your good work and hopefully the day will come when you run out of pictures to post …

(Can you "anonymous" guys use another pseudonym so it is easier for me to address who I'm talking to?)

You have said that the intention of this site is "to highlight jokers who don't want to park properly". That is, in a way, true. But then you go on and say that those who "tries to inject some sensible thinking into the discussion gets condemned". I quite disagree with that statement. Firstly, a vehicle who got itself posted here would display poor parking skills. As such, I don't think there is much reasonable defence we can give to the driver. Secondly, I never take comments that uses profanity and posted anonymously seriously. In any case, I might've missed such a post, so can you show me one?

A similar argument goes for those who talk about vandalism. Firstly, the author has said that he certainly doesn't approve of that. Then, if you were to note, those who advocate or call for vandalism tend to be the minority, and mostly, anonymous. (Anyway, your reference to TalkingCock.com is errorneous: TalkingCock.com is not a "bashing site" as you have implied, but it is a satirical site, which pokes fun at Singapore and Singaporeans in general.)

As for your last point, I quite agree with you. But the sad fact about people is that they find it is easy to make a blasphemous comment, but troublesome to do something constructive about it.

Anonymous said...

Pandemonium, your posting is very insightful. Have to agree with you on some of the points you raised, however, some points are debatable.

sensible thinking
Remember that there are always two sides to the same coin. As mentioned in a previous post, how one idiot parks will affect another. If you park in Suntec often enough, you will find space is a premium, so if you have a space, grab it. Imagine this. You find a space w/ an idiot next to you. You make the best of it and park as you need to go somewhere urgently. That joker comes back and drives away and one of the contributor come along and "Aha, another idiot parker !!" So it is not always black and white. When people try to rationalise or analysis the situation, all jump in and condemn ... is this rite ?

Profanity and absurd comments such as hammer, vandalise, scratch etc.
Such comments are just not constructive. Whether minority or otherwise, this can breed contempt as you may aware of the herd instinct. So my point is: Want to post, be constructive. I like pple who says, Inform building security or call HDB (Tel:6123-4567). These guys have something proper to say. Not the chaps who claims "If I there, will hammer the guy or parked in Handicap, break your leg then really handicap" (examples)

Constructive Action
Since we are in agreement that to make a blasphemous comment is easy, let's make a conscious effort to be constructive.

To those who want to post comments, say things that you are prepared to do and not fantasies that you wish to do but is illegal.

Sorri if sound preachy but let's be civil about the matter. Singaporeans have been accused so often of being uncivilised and not of 1st World Standard. let's start the change w/ the man in the mirror.

Another anonymous poster here.... And i stressed i m not too free to register for all the nicks and username just to let everyone know who I am and for my opinion to count.

This site is with good intentions and no doubt there is always room for judgemental errors. Every event and everything has 2 sides to a coin.

I believe that if there is any obsenity in this site, it would the GENUINE idiots of parking who got themselves plastered here. Sure, I mean there are some vehicles that might have gotten themselves infamous here as the parking lot next to him previously was a bad parker and by no means is his fault.

Well, when I looked through all the pictures on site, I ignore those who had parked close to the next parking lot. That kind of pictures do not convey much meaning as pictures apparently do not convey a million words.

But kudos to other blatant parking pictures, those deserved to have a parking-idiot label pasted on it and say "Cheese" to the cameras!

Keep it up... controversy is to stay... like it or not

I agree all the way you did this blog and these blo(k)es who did not get away with the evidences deserved to be publicly 'paraded' into your blog until they reply to you with their explanations, if any, and forgive them. But sometimes these blokes 'asked' for it to be idiots themselves. And I have one example of how a security guard was told off completely when he approached a 'bloke' who parked on another reserve lot. The bloke said loudly, "so what, if he comes you tell him I will remove my car ,ok!" So what do you think of such bloke? Does he deserve to be excuse?

Wee gave a good suggestion.

IMHO, in some cases, it might be genuine that the owner might be parking his ride alittle way out of proper. As it happens all the time when the one beside (arrive earlier on) cud be the one who hav eaten up some of the lot space, thus the next one gotta be id&ot you mentioned. Why not spare some thoughts?

And in some cases, there're times at which one side of the car needs to be wider to allow easier getting in/out. I.e. babies in child restraint seat, elderly, etc.
